Kolkata, the 1950s. Arati is forced to take her first job because her husband’s income isn’t enough to support the family. This decision is purely financial and is made despite resistance from her relatives. Eventually, Arati gains financial independence. Ultimately, her husband loses his job, and she becomes the sole breadwinner. They begin to drift apart.
