Prabha and Anu, roommates, live in Mumbai; they are educated and financially independent. However, in the eyes of society, they are “just women.” Prabha was married off at a very young age. Her husband left long ago to work in Europe and has no contact with her. She is very lonely, but her formal marriage prevents her from pursuing a personal life. The younger Anu is trying to refuse the groom chosen by her parents, since she already has a boyfriend. But he belongs to a different caste, and his family practices a different religion.
