Cambodia, 1975. Sydney Shenberg, a correspondent for The New York Times, is reporting on the civil war, accompanied by his indispensable assistant and friend—the kind, smart, and intelligent Diet Pran. As a translator and guide, he is second to none. When the Khmer Rouge triumphs, the Americans evacuate the country, and Diet Pran sends his family away with them, but he himself stays behind with Sydney to help him write about the coup.
