Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor of *Elle France*, suffered a stroke in 1995 at the age of 43, which left him completely paralyzed. By winking his left eye—the one that remained unparalyzed—whenever the person sitting next to him named the desired letter, Jean-Dominique revealed everything about his inner world, ranging from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his own body to imaginary stories about worlds he visited only in his dreams.
