The “Great Depression” of the 1930s. While wandering across America in search of work, Cheney ended up in New Orleans. He offered his services to Speedy, one of the “managers,” as a street fighter to participate in illegal bouts. Victory after victory brought him money and fame in this underground business. Cheney met Lucy, who dreamed of earning her own living, but Cheney’s “job”—and he was by no means young anymore—offered no promise of stability in their life together.
