The 19th century, a Japanese village ravaged by famine. To avoid starving to death, the villagers instituted a ritual of eliminating “useless” members of society: newborn boys were simply killed, and the elderly were carried by their own children to the summit of Mount Narayama and left to die. Orin is a 69-year-old woman, and she must die. Her son does not want to carry out the ritual, but his mother insists on honoring the tradition. After finding wives for her sons, she begins her final ascent to the summit.
