The film tells the story of the struggle by prisoners from the Irish Republican Army to have their status as political prisoners recognized. At first, they tried to achieve this by refusing to bathe, wear prison uniforms, and making a mess in their cells in every way possible. However, this tactic proved ineffective: the prisoners were forcibly shaved and washed, and beaten nearly to death in the process. Finally, one of them—Bobby Sands—decides to go on a hunger strike to the death…
