In northern France, ravaged by constant civil wars with the Burgundians and a long-standing war with the English, Jeanne was born to a simple peasant family—the family of Jacques d’Arc. At the age of 12, Joan first experienced a divine light, and a voice told her that God had entrusted her with the mission to save France and drive out the English. In the spring of 1429, the girl made her way to a fortress on the Loire and secured an audience with the king.
