“Waiting for ‘Superman’” (2010) is a highly acclaimed documentary by director David Guggenheim (who won an Oscar for “An Inconvenient Truth”) that explores the deep crisis in the U.S. public school system.
The film tells the stories of several ordinary American families from across the country who are trying to enroll their children in high-quality charter schools through a public lottery system, as local public schools are unable to provide them with a basic education. The director criticizes the bureaucracy and the entrenched teachers’ union system, which protects even incompetent staff, and shows how the government apparatus is depriving millions of children of a chance at a successful future.
This is a poignant and inspiring film about how we don’t need to wait for a superhero to save the next generation education reform depends on each and every one of us.
